Run for Mercy Nashville Weather Forecast with News Channel 5's Charlie Neese!

Friday, October 22, 2010

Did you know that you can Run for Mercy in any race?
On September 25, six Mercy supporters formed Team Mercy in the Inaugural Nashville Women’s Half Marathon in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. After picking up their race packets the day before the event, they enjoyed a team pasta dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory. On the morning of the race, these ladies showed up ready to go with their hot pink Run for Mercy t-shirts and a lot of team spirit! After a group photo, they were off to run 13.1 miles around the streets of Nashville through downtown, Centennial Park and Belmont Boulevard. Team member Andrea Fall said that what she most enjoyed was “running with a purpose in a local women’s event for something that helps so many women across the country.”

After the race, they picked up their hard-earned race medals and enjoyed some snacks. They were so excited to share a little about Mercy Ministries with other runners who asked about the bright pink Mercy shirts. Team member Erin Stryker said, “I believe in the vision of Mercy, and this was a great experience! I’m always happy to participate in Run for Mercy events, and I hope to do many more in the future.”

Thank you to Andrea Fall, Angie Kites, Paige Presley, Erin Stryker and Melanie Blair for supporting Mercy Ministries at the Nashville Women’s Half Marathon!

Training Tip #8 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

8. Eat right after you exercise.

To recover after training or racing, eat some healthy fats, healthy protein, and healthy carbohydrates. I recommend a Berry Smoothie.

Training Tip #7 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

7. Eat right before you exercise.
Eat a snack like a couple of eggs with a piece of fruit 2-3 hours before the race.  This will give your body plenty of time to digest your food before you exercise.  It will also provide you with energy for the race.

Training Tip #6 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

6. Don’t forget to warm up and cool down.

Spend at least 5 minutes before you train or race moving your muscles by walking quickly or jogging, and then do some light stretches. Don’t bounce in your stretches and don’t push your stretches farther than your body naturally will allow. The most important muscle groups to stretch are your hamstrings and your quads. Take time to jog or walk to cool down after a training session or race as well. Stretching after running will help elongate your muscles and aid in recovery.

Training Tip #5 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

5. Implement strength training!

Lift weights 2 - 3 times a week. This will help strengthen your muscles and also prevent injuries. Strength training will improve your glucose tolerance and increase insulin receptor sensitivity. This will help your body become a fat burner, rather than a sugar burner. This type of exercise also creates a bigger metabolic after burn than aerobic training, while also increasing fat free muscle, bone density and metabolism.

Training Tip #4 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

4. Start training!

Run 3 days each week for 2-3 months before the race.

Day 1: Fast, high effort day. Run or jog as fast as you
can for 1 minute, then walk 1 minute to recover.
Repeat anywhere from 2-10 intervals. This sort of
training will increase speed and muscle tone.

Day 2: Moderate intensity. Run or jog at a comfortable
pace. Start with 1 mile and gradually work up to the
full 5K.

Day 3: Long, slow run. Start at 2 miles and gradually
work up to 4 miles as the race day approaches.

Training Tip #3 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

3. Set a goal and write it down.

The #1 secret to success is writing down your goals.
A study done at Harvard Business School looked at
the importance of setting goals. They found 84% of
graduates had no specific goals at all, 13% had goals
but were not written down, and only 3% had clear
written goals and a strategy to accomplish them. The
results were shocking – the 3% who had written goals
and a strategy were earning on average 10x as much
as the other 97% combined! I like to write down my
goals and post them on my bathroom mirror so I see
them every day. Maybe you want to run your 5K in
under 30 minutes, or maybe you just want to finish!
Whatever it is, write it down!

Training Tip #2 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

2. Find a running and training partner.

Having accountability is huge! You are much more
likely to get out of bed to run in the morning if you
know you have to meet your partner at the track. Your
partner could be your spouse, sibling, good friend or
co-worker. Neither of you have to be expert runners.
Just having someone there to encourage you and
motivate you will make a world of difference.

Training Tip #1 for the Run for Mercy 5K & Family Walk
by Dr. Josh Axe
Wellness Physician & Radio Show Host

1. Eat real food not fake food.

To get your body in 5K shape, start eating real foods that come from nature--the foods God intended us to eat! Replace packaged, processed food filled with chemicals, additives and preservatives, with fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts & seeds and organic meats and eggs. These real foods will have the most antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other nutrients for optimal health. They will also help boost your energy levels as you train for your 5K. For more information on real foods vs. fake foods, check out my blog post about it!

Fundraising Made Easy!
Signing up for the Mercy Ministries Run For Mercy 5K and Family Walk is so easy. You can sign up as an individual runner, create a whole team, or if you'd rather spend time on the couch, you can still sign up as a virtual runner! If you're one of the first to register, you even get a t-shirt and drawstring backpack. Refer a friend and you get a cool water bottle.

But for many, fundraising can be an intimidating task. Don't sweat it. It's easier than you think. One of last year’s participants, Melanie, shares what she did to raise $680!

Here is what I did last year to raise $680:

• I created my team.

• I put the link for my team on my Facebook page and Twitter page from time to time (I posted it repeatedly and more often as the date got closer since many people don’t like to commit to things like this far in advance).

• I sent out personal emails to everyone I knew telling them about the event and asking them to sign up to run or walk with me and let them know that if they couldn’t attend the event, they could make a gift to my team or sign up as a virtual runner and still get a shirt and goody bag! Many of my local friends did the virtual runner thing so they could get those items, and some out of town friends who had no need for Nashville coupons made a donation.

• I found the official event page on Facebook and invited all of my Facebook friends to it.

• I wrote about the event on my blog and shared the link in case any of my readers wanted to go make a donation. I actually got about $50 donated this way from strangers in other states who read my blog.

• I talked about the event to friends and family and followed up with the info to sign up.

• I sent reminder personal emails to everyone I knew as the event date got closer to remind anyone who hadn’t signed up to please consider doing so.

• I told all my local friends and family that I’d be holding a pasta party at my house the night before as a thank you for their support (and then I did it!) This got a few extra people on board, and I got to have a fun night having dinner with my friends before the event.

I am already doing the same things this year. I just started last week and already have $205 from doing this sort of thing!

Feel free to use these great ideas to reach your fundraising goals and be creative. The most important part is getting the word out. Many are willing to give; they just need to be asked. So sign up, refer a friend, and get ready to Run For Mercy!

Run for Mercy Team Raises Support at Country Music Marathon!
Even in the drenching rainstorm, Mercy Ministries Nashville residents had a blast cheering for their Run for Mercy team this past weekend at the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon in Nashville! A total of 60 runners and walkers for Team Mercy joined more than 32,000 people in the half and full marathons that began at Centennial Park and wound through Music City. Many people thanked the Mercy girls for their spirited cheers as they served as an encouragement to everyone crossing the finish line! This year our team raised a total of $20,000!!

As a way to say thank you for Team Mercy’s support, participants received a goody bag that included a Run for Mercy shirt, a pair of sports socks, protein bars, coupons for local restaurants and more!

Babs Murray, a half marathon participant, had this to say about race day:

“I am so glad that I got the opportunity to run for such a great cause like Mercy. I hope that God will continue to bring supporters to this ministry so that they can continue to share the life Jesus offers to girls who are in need.”

The night before the race Mercy graduates, volunteers and residents all gathered for a pre-race pasta party at the Mercy Nashville home. While touring the rooms, everyone had an opportunity to enjoy a fruit smoothie, compliments of 9 Fruits, and several local sponsors including Zoe’s Kitchen, Trader Joe’s and Party City donated refreshments and decorations. During dinner, graduate Georgianna Estell shared her testimony of freedom with the group, and several runners and walkers shared their own words of encouragement.

Here is what a few of the residents had to say about supporting the Run for Mercy team:

Katelynn said, “I loved cheering everyone on. It reminded me of how our supporters, counselors and Mercy staff cheer us on while we are in the program. It was so fun.”

Amanda said, “Cheering for the Run for Mercy team was super fun! I loved watching the runners finish with enthusiasm because they reached their goal. It was such a blessing to see our team run in support of us.”

A big thanks to our top individual sponsor, Mark Black, and our top team sponsor, Team Exodus of Exodus Health Center in Nashville. Many people are committing their resources and time to support the work of Mercy Ministries as runners, sponsors, and volunteers at our Run for Mercy events across the U.S. You still have an opportunity to lace up your sneakers and support Mercy as an individual runner or by joining a team.
